The Grammys, Women in Trouble
The Grammy's were held last night and there were few surprises. Beyonce slayed, Adele took her just desserts and CeeLo Green dressed as a cartoon cartoon character, wonder if he'll be the meme of the week? It was for all sake and purposes generally what any one accepted. My problem comes from the Reggae category and its general lack of any diversity in its winners. The nominees in that category were J Boog for Rose Petals; Ziggy Marley for Ziggy Marley; Raging Fyah for Everlasting; Sly & Robbie Presents ... Reggae For Her; Rebelution for Falling Into Place; and SOJA for SOJA - Live In Virginia. First major props to Devin Di Dakta for being nominated in the category, it is just one mark of his immense talent and I hope he keeps it up. But back to the matter at hand, it has been a curse of the Reggae category that when a Marley puts out an album, an automatic win is expected. Just save the time and don't show up, I understand that they are essentially Reggae royalty but coupled with the fact his wife sits on one of the Grammy's voting boards sheds now opens their choice to more criticism. This isn't to take away from Ziggy and his immense talent, just pointing out that the category is essentially useless if all the winners can be counted on one hand.
Women in Trouble
Jamaica is now in an even more terrible state as the crime wave has evolved into a more merciless monster. The current trend among these dark and evil persons is to now to target our women and girls, rape and then murder them. In the last couple of years, the level of violence against our females has risen drastically and it is coming from every direction. From the murder/suicide incidents with our police officers and their spouses to the domestic abuse faced daily behind closed doors, it is obvious that there is something wrong. The Government's response to this is to ban tinting on public transport - a law that was passed years ago and was not enforced, it is currently facing opposition from the Taxi Drivers' Association- and preventative detention. Preventative detention is the act of locking up individuals as it is believed that their being on the streets would not be in the best interest of safety for individuals/society. It is controversial at most but for domestic abuse situations, it may just save a life. But for our women, please take precautions in your daily movements, careful of those online interactions and watch the surroundings.
Big up Post of the day: Lucea Mayor, Sherridan Samuels
Today's big up post of the day goes to the Mayor of Lucea, Sherridan Samuels who has turned his allowance of a vehicle to carry out his mayoral duties. Mayor Samuels turned down the vehicle after claiming that the Hanover Municipal council was in dire need of a vehicle and the funds were not present to purchase two vehicles.
The act is a well-needed one in our time when politicians are held in low regard. The Lucea Parish is also in dire need of some good PR as their previous mayor is now before the courts for corruption after she allegedly handed out contracts to her friends and family without following procedure.
